Nagoya, Japan, coming next According to the 33rd annual report of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, it received a total of 20,905 complaints of corruption, financial irregularities and loss to public assets in the fiscal 2022-23.Of the sector-wise distribution of complaints, the highest number of complaints (35.95 per cent) were related to federal affairs and general administration (including local levels). Similarly, 14.55 per cent were related to the education sector, 6.09 per cent to land administration, 4.14 per cent to forests and environment, 3.12 per cent to health and population, 4.10 per cent to physical infrastructure and transport, 3.58 per cent to the home administration, 2.71 per cent to tourism, industry and commerce, and 2.58 per cent to energy and water resources.Similarly, 2.51 per cent of the complaints were related to water supply and urban development, 1.89 per cent to agriculture and livestock, and 1.03 per cent to communication and information technology.

Corruption is rampant in public offices, including local levels, where service-seekers are rarely given services without bribe money.As per the CIAA report, the amount of bribe money to be offered or given to the concerned officials depends on the nature of service sought.The key areas of corruption include planning, administration, financial administration, revenue, civil registration, education, building permit, health, supplies management, environment and women and children, among others.The report stated that Land Revenue Office, Survey Office, Inland Revenue office, Municipality/Rural Municipality Office, Water Supply Office, District Administration Office, District Education Office, Transport Management Office, District Police Office, District Agricultural Office, Nepal Telecom, Land Reform Office, Cottage and Small Industries Office and Road Division Office were the top 14 hubs of corruption.A version of this article appears in the print on October 12, 2023, of The Himalayan Times .
